We always start our Dru Yoga and Dru Meditation practice with activations and they really are a magical beginning to any session. Beyond the physical benefits of any warm-up, the Dru activations can take you from sloth mode to eager beaver in just minutes! Honestly, they are a real mood-changer and energy booster. They are my number one recommendation to any couch potatoes battling inertia. Just start. They are easy, gentle and as energetic as you want them to be, but once you start you won’t want to stop – I promise.

I like to practice my activations at odd moments throughout the day – like while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil – and on all but the coldest and rainiest days I like to spend 10 minutes or so doing my activations in the garden. Even in the winter, the vigourous movement keeps me warm while I fill my lungs with fresh air and allow the greenery to heal my heart chakra.

Life is stressful. Fact. And it seems to me that it gets ever more so as technology progresses. Just look – yes, actually look up from your smartphone – at the abundance of frowns and worry lines on those around you. But what is society’s treatment of choice? Botox perhaps… but, more commonly, medication. In other words, we put a Band-Aid on the problem rather than addressing the root cause.

The general consensus among psychiatrists is that between 10% and 30% of the population is likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder at any one time… Anxiety disorders are painfully debilitating… Those who fail to seek treatment – and many still do – are at a higher risk of committing suicide.

Far from being simply the airy-fairy pastime of choice for hippies, yoga can provide very real benefits for those dealing with mental health issues, including anxiety. Indeed, for thousands of years, yoga’s asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork) and meditation have been used to relieve stress and create a calm state of mind. I think – at least I hope – that anyone who has ever attended a yoga class will attest to the fact you invariably leave feeling like a lighter more Zen-like version of your pre-class stressed self.

With regular practice, these benefits can become longer lasting. Whilst anxiety is almost always focused on the future – often on the fear of the ‘worst case scenario’ – our focus when practicing yoga and meditation is very much on the ‘now’. This mental shift is obviously very helpful but, beyond this, whilst practicing we are also cultivating presence and patience, and learning to control our reactions and emotions. As we carry these skills over into our everyday lives, they enable us to meet potentially stressful situations with equanimity (or at least something approaching it)!

I have created the following yoga classs to help you to move from anxiety and stress to a place of calm, surrender and relaxation. It is a very gentle Dru Yoga class, with a little Yin Yoga interspersed. The focus is on releasing negative emotions, grounding and finding peace in troubled times.

Another suggestion for helping us to deal with anxiety is the practice of coherent breathing. I have been practising this for 20 minutes every day lately and I find it amazingly grounding and calming. Even my voice changes after practising it! (Of course, everyone’s experience will be different though and it does not necessarily work well for everyone.)

Most people looking to buy a thick yoga mat are no doubt doing so for increased comfort, especially for their knees and wrists. You may want a thick yoga mat because you have arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome, or maybe just because you are skinny with bony knees like me!

Personally, I’m all about comfort in Savasana, so a thick yoga mat is a little luxury I enjoy, especially when practicing at home. I would also recommend a thick yoga mat if you enjoy sound baths, yoga nidra or restorative yoga where any discomfort could be distracting and may spoil the experience.

Most yoga mats are just 4mm to 5mm thick and, despite the demand, a thick yoga mat can be hard to find. Here’s my pick of the best thick yoga mats available…

Manduka Pro Yoga Mat (6mm thick)

This is my favourite yoga mat! Although it seems a little pricey, it’s the only yoga mat you will ever need as it’s extremely resilient and guaranteed to last a lifetime. It will never peel, flake, or fade.

The Manduka PRO yoga mat is 6mm thick with high density and cushioning. I find the cushioning and support to be enough that I don’t require any additional padding for my knees, and yet the mat is firm enough that the flow of my practice is not affected and my joint stability is not challenged (which could, of course, lead to pain or injury).

The Manduka PRO yoga mat comes in two lengths, 180 cm and 216 cm, and in a variety of colours.

The Manduka PRO yoga mat has a closed-cell surface which prevents sweat, dirt and smells from absorbing into the mat and also makes it easy to clean. This does mean, however, that sweat can cause it to become slippery. There is also a dot-pattern on the bottom of the mat which prevents the mat from sliding.

The Manduka PRO yoga mat is made from eco-certified safe PVC. It is non-toxic (specifically phthalate free), 100% latex free, and is environmentally friendly with an emissions-free and zero-waste manufacturing process.

Pogamat XXL Yoga Mat (7mm thick)

The Pogamat XXL is twice as wide as a typical yoga mat, an extra 25cm long, and a very comfortable 7mm thick. The grip and traction that this mat offers are incredible and the quality is excellent.

Admittedly, the size of the Pogamat XXL does make it less portable and less suitable for using in yoga classes where space is limited, but it is ideal for partner yoga and when practicing at home you will quickly become spoilt by the freedom of movement that the extra space affords you.

The Pogamat XXL is made from premium high density eco-friendly PVC and contains no latex or silicone. It is odor-free and phthalate-free, and is made with eco-friendly manufacturing techniques.

Fusion Mat by JadeYoga (8mm thick)

Marketing itself as ‘nature’s best yoga mat’, the Fusion Mat is made in the USA, combining natural rubber from the Far East with modern technology. Natural rubber is a renewable resource and contains no ozone-depleting substances, PVC, EVA or other synthetic plastics or rubbers. Plus, through its partnership with Trees for the Future, JadeYoga plants a tree for every mat sold.

The Fusion Mat is both thick and firm, providing all the support and cushioning you need – the perfect balance of comfort, performance and resilience.

Because the Fusion Mat is made with open-cell natural rubber, moisture is absorbed and the grip is fantastic – even when wet with perspiration! Of course, the downside of this is that the mat will need frequent cleaning.

Yoga Jellies

Of course, there are some downsides to a thick yoga mat. Balance poses will be somewhat more challenging and it may be harder to maintain an equal pressure through both palms, knees or feet. A thick yoga mat will also be heavier to carry and may not fit in your mat bag.

One alternative to a thick yoga mat may be Yoga Jellies. These are flexible discs which can be placed wherever you need them to provide cushioning. Most commonly they are placed under the knees and wrists.

Have you ever thought about where God actually is? Does He reside in Heaven? Or could it be that God is not an external being to be observed, but rather a universal truth that lies within each and every one of us? I consider this to be much like the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that is mentioned in the Holy Bible, or the Higher Self that is a more common term among Spiritualists.

When Jesus was asked when the Kingdom of God would come, he replied that the Kingdom of God is not something that people will be able to see and point to, but something that is within us (Luke 17:20-21).

In fact, within every religion we find reference to life’s ultimate truth and treasure lying within us. More than this, each religion recognizes that this inner, transcendental reality can be experienced. Indeed, it is this experience that, in India, is referred to as ‘Yoga’, whereas the Buddhists call it ‘Nirvana.’

This brings me to the inspiration of this post – a beautiful poem by Kabir:

Are you looking for me? I am in the next seat.
My shoulder is against yours.
You will not find me in stupas, not in Indian shrine rooms,
not in synagogues, nor in cathedrals:
not in masses, nor kirtans,
not in legs winding around your own neck,
nor in eating nothing but vegetables.
When you really look for me, you will see me instantly –
you will find me in the tiniest house of time.
Kabir says: Student, tell me, what is God?
He is the breath inside the breath.

KABIR

Kabir’s reference to ‘the breath inside the breath’ hints at one way that we can experience this ‘Nirvana.’ In Sanskrit, the word for breath is prana, and prana means life. When we watch our breath during meditation, we will come to notice a natural pause at the end of the inhale and of the exhale. OSHO describes it well:

Sitting silently, just start watching your breath. The easiest way to watch is from the entrance of the nose. When the breath comes in, feel the touch of the breath at the entrance of the nose – watch it there. The touch will be easier to watch, breath will be too subtle; in the beginning just watch the touch. The breath goes in, and you feel it going in: watch it. And then follow it, go with it. You will find there comes a point where it stops. Just somewhere near your navel it stops – for a tiny, tiny moment, for a pal, it stops. Then it moves outwards again; then follow it – again feel the touch, the breath going out of the nose. Follow it, go with it outside – again you will come to a point, the breath stops for a very tiny moment. Then again the cycle starts.

OSHO

We do not force or manipulate the breath in any way, but simply witness it. However, if we continue to watch the breath we will observe that the gaps increase. When I originally learnt this technique during my Dru Yoga Teacher Training, everyone’s experiences of these gaps differed greatly. For me, the gap at the end of the inhale feels pregnant with expectation but in the gap at the end of the exhale I feel a sense of peace. What do you feel?

It is these gaps that are ‘the breath inside the breath.’ They are the doorways to the ultimate treasure that lies within us – to God.

Om is a mantra and mystical sound of Hindu origin which is considered sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. Om is actually pronounced ‘A-U-M’ as in ‘home’ and each syllable can be felt to vibrate within our bodies – the “A” (“ahh”) sound in the heart, the “U” (“oooh”) sound in the abdomen and the “M” (“mmm”) sound in the head.

The Om symbol itself represents states of consciousness:

Om is believed to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe and has been chanted for thousands of years by Hindus and Buddhists.

Om is the imperishable word. Om is the universe, and this is the exposition of Om. The past, the present, and the future, all that was, all that is, all that will be is Om. Likewise, all else that may exist beyond the bounds of time, that too is Om.

It seems that there is now some scientific proof of this:

Astrophysicists have now detected echoes of the “Big Bang” that happened at the beginning of time. And this sound they have detected is a humming sound, very much like that of the “Om”.

Cymatics, the study of visible sound, also reveals some fascinating truths. The special apparatus used reveals that sounds have distinct geometrical shapes. We can see in the following video that the sacred sound Om takes the shape of an ellipse, a shape which organizes our universe on a macro-level.
How cool is that?! The following excerpt from Tuning Fork Therapy: Planetary Tuning Forks by Francine Milford also describes cymatics experiments in which sand particles sprinkled on a metal plate were seen to form different geometric patterns when exposed to various musical tones:

In the late 1960s, the Swiss scientist Hans Jenny discovered that… the sound ‘OM’ produced a pattern similar to that of the ancient Indian mandala for ‘OM’.

In my post entitled The Power of our Words & Intentions, I wrote about Masaru Emoto’s research which demonstrates that our words and intentions have an effect on the molecular structure of water. The following recording, Ultimate Om, was created by Jonathan Goldman in response to 9/11 as a tool to help people release their abundant fear and anxiety:

I wanted to combine science and spirituality again, so here we have the people chanting the “Om” at the sacred ratio of 2:3, which many believe is the most healing and balancing musical interval. This interval, which is called the perfect 5th, was said to be the tuning of the Greek God Apollo’s Lyre. It can balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain, as well as the auric field.

Chanting has many therapeutic benefits. It lengthens the out breath, helps to oxygenate the brain, lowers blood pressure, and is a wonderful way to express emotion. Dr. Herbert Benson observed years ago that chanting helps induce the “relaxation” response, causing a reduction in heart rate and respiration rate and creating calm brainwave activity. Chanting can therefore be a great way for both adults and teenagers to relax.

Dr. Ranjie Singh found that chanting specific mantras causes a release of the hormone melatonin and has written about the many benefits of this (including shrinkage of tumors and enhanced sleep) in his book entitled Self-Healing: Powerful Techniques.

Research by scientists such as Fabian Maman, Masuru Emoto and Hans Jenny has proved that sound can alter cellular and molecular structure. Click here for further information on the work of Fabian Maman who photographed haemoglobin exposed to an ascending chromatic scale and demonstrated that each note affected the cell structure differently.

According to Jonathan Goldman,

Some believe that the recitation of sacred mantras actually causes the physical and etheric bodies to change their vibrational frequency level—becoming more attuned if you like, with divine energy. Thus, when one chants a mantra for an extended period of time, to invoke, for example some deity, the higher energies of that deity will encode itself upon the chanter. This is one purpose for much mantric chanting—to become one and unite with the energy of the deity that one is chanting for. If the person has some sickness or imbalance, this imbalance can frequently be released by having the energy of the deity encode itself upon the person. This actually comes from the concept of vibrational (as opposed to allopathic) medicine, which is the basis of many healing modalities, including homeopathy and acupuncture—that all the universe including our bodies, is simply made of vibration—a concept, incidentally, that the new Superstring theory of physics supports. Everything is in a state of vibration and when we are in a natural, resonant vibration, we are in a state of health. But if some part of the body begins to vibrate at a counter frequency, the energy becomes stuck and disease sets in. Therefore, by mantric chanting, one can cause stuck energy to become released, and we can return to our natural state of resonance, effecting a cure.

Call-and-response chanting is a great way to get started and one of my favourite artists is Krishna Das, who has a remarkably soulful voice and has been called yoga’s “rock star”.

Krishna Das is the best-selling western chant artist of all time. His album ‘Live Ananda‘ (released January 2012) was nominated for a Grammy in the ‘Best New Age Album’ category.

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behaviour and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

Recognizing that human beings are part of nature, Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation, and structure. Known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. Each of us has a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature.

  • If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable.
  • If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life.
  • When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing.

Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate. Biological systems weave these five forces into three primary patterns known as doshas. They are most easily thought of as mind-body principles that govern our style of thinking and behaving.

  • Vata dosha, woven from the elements of Space and Air, regulates movement and change in our minds and bodies.
  • Pitta dosha, comprised of Fire and Water, governs digestion and metabolism.
  • Kapha dosha, made from Earth and Water, maintains and protects the integrity and structure of our mind and body.

All three doshas are present in every cell, tissue, and organ – for movement, metabolism, and protection are essential components of life. What makes life interesting is that although everyone has all three doshas, each of us mixes them together in a unique way, which determines the distinctive qualities of our mind and body. For each element, there is a balanced and imbalanced expression:

  • When Vata is balanced, a person is lively and creative, but when there is too much movement in the system, a person tends to experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation and difficulty focusing.
  • When Pitta is functioning in a balanced manner, a person is warm, friendly, disciplined, a good leader and a good speaker. When Pitta is out of balance, a person tends to be compulsive and irritable and may suffer from indigestion or an inflammatory condition.
  • When Kapha is balanced, a person is sweet, supportive and stable, but when Kapha is out of balance, a person may experience sluggishness, weight gain and sinus congestion.

An important goal of Ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation to reestablish balance.

For anyone wanting to learn more, I couldn’t recommend the following books more. They contain a wealth of knowledge and will help you to determine your own dosha. I would recommend reading all of them, so that you really understand how to achieve balance through Ayurveda and can therefore adapt to any imbalances on a daily basis. The fourth book is, in my opinion, by far the best Ayurvedic cookbook available.

Ayurveda has been used for thousands of years to alleviate every type of health issue, including physical injuries. Ayurveda contrasts with the mechanical allopathic approach to medicine in that it looks at the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—but by including consciousness, it is not excluding the physical body. For virtually every physical ailment or injury, Ayurveda offers a healing protocol.

In contrast with conventional medicine, which has devoted a lot of effort to isolating the differences among various diseases, Ayurveda focuses on the unique qualities of individuals, pointing out that diseases differ mainly because people are so different.

Ayurveda teaches that all health-related measures — whether an exercise program, dietary plan or herbal supplement — must be based on an understanding of an individual’s unique mind-body constitution or dosha. By knowing a patient’s dosha, an Ayurvedic doctor can tell which diet, physical activities, and medical therapies are most likely to help, and which might do no good or even cause harm.

In addition, while Western medicine has tended to treat the symptoms of disease, Ayurveda seeks to eliminate illness by treating the underlying cause.

Ayurveda is a healing system that treats the whole person – the integration of body, mind, and spirit – rather than simply treating individual symptoms.
